How it works

Fee = amount × rate% + fixed · Net = amount − fee · Gross to net a target = (target + fixed) ÷ (1 − rate%)

Stripe’s standard online fee is a percentage of the charge plus a small fixed amount per successful transaction. This tool shows the fee, your net deposit and the effective rate, then reverses the math: because the fixed part does not scale with the amount, simply adding the percentage undercharges — the reverse formula divides by one minus the rate so a payment nets exactly your target. The percentage and fixed fee are editable to match international cards, currency conversion, or a different Stripe product.

Worked example

On a $100 online card charge at 2.9% + $0.30, the fee is $3.20, so you receive $96.80 — an effective 3.20%. To land $100 in your account, charge $103.30.

Frequently asked questions

Does Stripe refund fees on refunds?

No. When you refund a customer, Stripe returns the full amount to them but keeps the original processing fee, so a refunded sale leaves you out of pocket by the fee. Factor that into your return policy.

Why is my effective rate above 2.9%?

The fixed $0.30 is a larger share of a small charge, so the effective rate is highest on tiny payments and approaches 2.9% only on large ones. The calculator shows the true effective rate for your amount.

Are international cards more expensive?

Yes. International cards and currency conversion add extra percentage points on top of the base rate. Raise the fee percentage to model a cross-border or multi-currency charge.
