Video Game Backlog Completion Time Calculator
See how long it will take to clear your gaming backlog from the number of games, average length and hours you play each week.
How it works
Total hours = games × hours each · Weeks = total hours ÷ hours per week
A backlog is really a time budget, not a pile of boxes: the honest number is total hours to finish divided by the hours you actually play each week. The twist is intake — if you buy games faster than you can complete their hours, the backlog grows no matter how much you play. This tool compares your yearly play hours against the hours your new purchases add, so you can see whether the pile is shrinking or quietly expanding.
Worked example
25 games at 20 hours each is 500 hours. Playing 8 hours a week clears 416 hours a year, so the backlog takes about 500 ÷ 8 = 62.5 weeks, or 1.2 years. But buying 10 new games a year adds 200 hours, leaving only ~216 hours of net progress annually.
Frequently asked questions
What average length should I use?
Main-story completion is a good baseline — around 8–15 hours for linear games and 40+ for RPGs. If you chase 100% completion, multiply generously; those hours are often double the main-story figure.
Why does the backlog keep growing?
Because purchases add hours faster than you play them. If your new games each year total more play hours than you have time for, the net trend is negative and the pile expands regardless of effort.
How can I clear it faster?
Play longer, pick shorter games first to build momentum, drop titles you no longer want, and slow the intake. Finishing three 10-hour games beats stalling on one 60-hour epic.
