Vig Calculator (Bookmaker Margin, Overround & No-Vig Fair Odds)

Measure the vig (juice) in a 2-way or 3-way betting market: overround, hold percentage and payout rate, and remove the margin to get no-vig fair odds and true probabilities by three methods.

How it works

implied pᵢ = 1 ÷ decimal oddsᵢ · market % S = Σ pᵢ · overround = S − 1 · hold = 1 − 1/S · fair probability: multiplicative pᵢ/S; additive pᵢ − (S − 1)/n; power pᵢᵏ with k chosen so Σ pᵢᵏ = 1 · fair odds = 1 ÷ fair probability

A bookmaker builds its profit into the prices: the implied probabilities of every outcome add up to more than 100%. The excess is the overround; the hold (what the book expects to keep from balanced action) is 1 − 1/S — a standard -110/-110 line has a 4.76% overround and a 4.55% hold. Removing the margin gives "fair" or no-vig odds, the market's estimate of the true chances. The multiplicative method scales every outcome equally; the additive method subtracts the same amount from each; the power method takes more margin from long shots, matching the favourite–longshot bias seen in real markets.

Worked example

A point spread priced -110 on both sides is 1.91 decimal, a 52.38% implied chance each. The market adds to 104.76%, so the overround is 4.76% and the hold is 4.55% (a 95.45% payout rate). Removing the vig leaves 50% on each side — fair odds of 2.00 / 2.00, or +100.

Frequently asked questions

What does vig mean in betting?

Vig (vigorish or juice) is the bookmaker's commission built into the odds. At -110 you risk $110 to win $100; the extra $10 is the vig, so you need to win 52.38% of such bets just to break even.

How do I calculate no-vig odds?

Convert each side to implied probability, add them, and divide each by the total (multiplicative method). For -120 / +100: 54.55% and 50.00%, total 104.55%, fair probabilities 52.17% and 47.83%, fair odds 1.92 and 2.09.

What is the difference between overround and hold?

Overround is the excess of the market percentage over 100% (S − 1). Hold is the share of all money staked the bookmaker keeps if the action is balanced (1 − 1/S). They are close but not equal: 4.76% overround is a 4.55% hold.

Which margin-removal method should I use?

Multiplicative is the standard quick method. In markets with a strong favourite and long shots (racing, outrights, 3-way football) the power or Shin methods usually estimate true probabilities better because books load more margin onto long shots.
