Walking Distance from Steps Calculator
Convert a step count into distance walked in kilometres and miles, using a stride length estimated from your height.
How it works
Step length = factor × height · distance = steps × step length · factor ≈ 0.415 (male) or 0.413 (female)
Step length scales closely with height, so a widely used estimate multiplies your height by about 0.415 for men and 0.413 for women. Multiply that step length by your step count and you have the distance covered. Because it is derived from height rather than a fixed 0.76 m default, this is more personal than the generic conversions built into many pedometers.
Worked example
A 170 cm person (male factor 0.415) has a step length of about 70.6 cm. Walking 10,000 steps covers 10,000 × 0.706 m ≈ 7,055 m, which is about 7.05 km or 4.38 miles.
Frequently asked questions
Why estimate step length from height?
Taller people take longer strides, and height explains most of that variation. The 0.415/0.413 factors come from gait research and give a much better personal estimate than a one-size-fits-all step length.
Is walking step length the same as running?
No — running stride is considerably longer. This calculator uses walking factors, so it will underestimate distance if your step count came from running.
How can I get an exact step length instead?
Walk a measured 10 metres, count your steps, and divide 10 m by that count. Substituting your measured value for the height estimate makes the distance essentially exact.
