Weighted Decision Matrix Calculator

Score two options against weighted criteria and see which wins — a simple weighted decision matrix for any choice.

Criterion 1 weight
Option A — score on 1 (0–10)
Option B — score on 1 (0–10)
Criterion 2 weight
Option A — score on 2 (0–10)
Option B — score on 2 (0–10)
Criterion 3 weight
Option A — score on 3 (0–10)
Option B — score on 3 (0–10)

How it works

Weighted score = Σ (weight × score) · Normalized = weighted score ÷ Σ weights

A weighted decision matrix scores each option on every criterion, multiplies each score by that criterion’s weight, and sums the products. Weighting lets the criteria you care about most drive the result, so a strong score on a heavily weighted criterion outranks several weak-but-light ones. Dividing by the total weight gives an average on the same 0–10 scale as the inputs, which makes two runs with different weight totals comparable.

Worked example

Weights 5, 3, 2. Option A scores 8, 5, 7 → 5×8 + 3×5 + 2×7 = 40 + 15 + 14 = 69. Option B scores 6, 9, 4 → 30 + 27 + 8 = 65. Option A wins 69 to 65, an average of 6.9 versus 6.5 per unit of weight.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the weights?

Give each criterion a number reflecting its importance — a common approach is 1 to 5, or splitting 100 points across criteria. Only the relative sizes matter, since the score is normalized by the total weight.

What scale should the scores use?

Any consistent scale works; this calculator uses 0 to 10 where higher is better. Keep the same scale for both options so the comparison is fair.

What if it is a tie?

A tie means the weighted scores are equal. Refine the weights to reflect what truly matters most, or add a tie-breaking criterion, then re-run the matrix.
