Weighted Final Grade Calculator
Combine weighted course components into your overall grade, and see the letter grade the weighted average earns.
How it works
Grade = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ weights · Letter: A ≥ 90, B ≥ 80, C ≥ 70, D ≥ 60, else F
A weighted grade multiplies each component’s score by its weight, adds those up, and divides by the total weight. Dividing by the total weight rather than assuming it equals 100% means the result stays correct even if the weights do not add to exactly 100 — the heavier a component, the more its score pulls the final grade. The letter grade uses the standard US ten-point scale.
Worked example
Scores of 85%, 78% and 92% with weights 40, 25 and 35 give (85×40 + 78×25 + 92×35) ÷ 100 = (3400 + 1950 + 3220) ÷ 100 = 85.7%, a B. The heaviest component (40%) pulls the average toward its 85% score.
Frequently asked questions
Do the weights have to add up to 100%?
No. The calculator divides by whatever the weights total, so 40/25/35 or 4/2.5/3.5 give the same result. It flags the total so you can confirm it matches your syllabus.
How is a weighted grade different from a simple average?
A simple average treats every component equally. A weighted grade lets a final exam worth 40% affect your grade far more than a quiz worth 5%, matching how courses are actually graded.
What grading scale does the letter use?
The standard US ten-point scale: 90+ is an A, 80–89 a B, 70–79 a C, 60–69 a D, and below 60 an F. Your school’s cutoffs may differ slightly.
