How it works

Zakat = 2.5% × (cash + gold + silver + investments + trade stock + receivables − short-term debts), if that total ≥ nisab (85 g gold or 595 g silver)

Zakat is the obligatory annual charity on wealth held for a full lunar year (hawl) above the nisab threshold. The rate is one fortieth — 2.5% — of net zakatable assets: cash and bank balances, gold and silver at market value, shares and funds (many scholars allow using the zakatable portion of the underlying company assets for long-term holdings), business stock and money owed to you, less debts falling due within the year. Personal-use items — your home, car, clothing and everyday jewellery according to some schools — are not counted. The nisab is set by weight of precious metal: 87.48 g of gold (commonly rounded to 85 g) or 612.36 g of silver (595 g). Because silver is far cheaper, the silver nisab is lower and brings more people into the obligation, which is why many scholars prefer it. Zakat is typically due on a fixed date each lunar year, often set in Ramadan.

Worked example

$15,000 cash, 60 g gold at $110 ($6,600), $8,000 of shares, $2,000 of debts: net $27,600, well above the silver nisab of about $774 → zakat $690.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay zakat on my pension or 401(k)?

Opinions differ. Many scholars say zakat is due on the accessible value each year; others only on withdrawal. Ask a scholar you trust.

Is zakat due on my home or car?

No — items for personal use are exempt. Property bought to resell or rent out is treated as business stock or income.

Lunar year or calendar year?

The hawl is a lunar (Hijri) year of about 354 days. If you use the solar calendar for convenience, some scholars suggest 2.577% to compensate.
