How it works

Nisab = nisab weight × today’s price per gram, with 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver (Hanafi / subcontinent weights 87.48 g and 612.36 g) · Zakat = 2.5% × zakatable wealth, if it has stayed ≥ nisab for a lunar year · On a Gregorian zakat date: 2.5% × 365.24 ÷ 354.37 = 2.577% · Zakat al-fitr = one sa’ of staple food (about 2.5–3 kg) × local price per kg × household members, or the fixed amount your mosque announces

Zakat becomes obligatory when a Muslim’s zakatable wealth has stayed at or above the nisab, the minimum threshold, for a full lunar year (the hawl). It is then paid at 2.5% of everything zakatable held on the zakat date. The nisab was set as 20 mithqal of gold and 200 dirhams of silver. Converted to grams this is usually taken as 85 g of gold and 595 g of silver; many Hanafi and South Asian authorities, and the UK’s National Zakat Foundation, use the heavier conversion of 87.48 g and 612.36 g. The two metals once had about the same value, but today silver is far cheaper, so the silver standard gives a much lower threshold. That is why many scholars and charities recommend it for cash, so that zakat reaches more of the poor; others apply the gold standard. The calculator shows both, with the one you choose highlighted. The lunar year is about 354 days. If you pay on a fixed Gregorian date you hold the wealth about 11 days longer each time, so the equivalent rate is 2.5% × 365.24 ÷ 354.37 = 2.577%. Zakat al-fitr (fitrana) is separate: one sa’ of the local staple food for every member of the household, including children, paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. A sa’ is a volume measure, so its weight depends on the food, about 2 kg of wheat or 2.5–3 kg of rice; most mosques announce a cash amount for the year, which you can enter instead.

Worked example

With gold at $128.00 per gram and silver at $1.83, the silver nisab is 595 × $1.83 = $1,088.85 and the gold nisab 85 × $128 = $10,880.00. Holding $24,000 of zakatable wealth for a lunar year is above both, so 2.5% = $600.00 is due (on a Gregorian date, 2.577% = $618.41). Zakat al-fitr for a household of five, at 2.75 kg of rice costing $2.40 per kg, is $6.60 per person, $33.00 in total, paid before the Eid prayer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nisab for zakat today?

It is the value of 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver (87.48 g or 612.36 g in the Hanafi conversion) at today’s price. Because metal prices move daily, the nisab changes too; multiply the gram weight by the current price per gram, or enter both prices above.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Both are valid opinions. The silver nisab is much lower, so more people pass it and pay; many scholars and charities recommend it for cash savings and mixed assets. If all your wealth is gold, the gold nisab is commonly used. Follow your school or a scholar you trust.

Do I pay zakat only on the amount above the nisab?

No. Once your wealth has been at or above the nisab for a lunar year, zakat is 2.5% of the whole zakatable amount on your zakat date, not just the part above the threshold.

Why is the rate 2.577% on a Gregorian date?

The Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year. Paying 2.5% once per solar year would pay slightly less over time, so 2.5 × 365.24 ÷ 354.37 = 2.577% keeps it equivalent.

Do I pay zakat on my salary or pension?

On what remains in your possession on your zakat date, not on income as it arrives. Many scholars treat the accessible part of a pension pot as zakatable; ask your local authority.

How much is zakat al-fitr per person?

One sa’ of the local staple, about 2.5–3 kg of rice or 2 kg of wheat, or its cash value. Mosques and charities announce a fixed amount each Ramadan; it is due for every household member, including children, before the Eid prayer.
