AP Score College Credit Estimator
Estimate whether an AP exam score earns college credit and the tuition dollars that credit is worth.
How it works
Earns credit if AP score ≥ school threshold · Tuition value = credit hours × cost per hour
AP exams are scored 1–5, and colleges each set their own cutoff for awarding credit — most common is a 3, but selective schools often require a 4 or 5, and some grant none. When an exam does qualify it usually replaces one introductory course, so its dollar value is the course credit hours times what those hours would otherwise cost in tuition. Multiplying that across several exams is how AP can shave a full semester off a degree.
Worked example
A score of 4 at a school that grants credit for 3 or higher earns the credit. At 3 credit hours and $400 per hour, that is worth 3 × $400 = $1,200 in tuition you do not have to pay.
Frequently asked questions
What AP score do I need for college credit?
It depends entirely on the college. A 3 is the most common minimum, but many competitive universities require a 4 or 5, and some award placement without credit. Check each school's AP credit policy by exam.
How much money can AP credit save?
Each qualifying exam typically covers one 3–4 credit-hour course. At $400 per credit hour that is $1,200–$1,600 per exam, so a handful of qualifying scores can save several thousand dollars and shorten time to graduation.
