How it works

attendance % = attended ÷ held × 100 · can miss = ⌊attended ÷ minimum − held⌋ · must attend in a row = ⌈(minimum × held − attended) ÷ (1 − minimum)⌉ · term: need = ⌈minimum × (held + remaining)⌉ − attended

Attendance is the share of the classes held that you attended. You can enter either the classes you missed or the ones you attended. Each future absence adds one to the classes held but nothing to the classes attended, while each class you attend adds one to both. Solving those two relations against your minimum gives the largest number of classes you can still miss, or the shortest run of attendance that lifts you back over the line. If you know how many classes are left in the term, the calculator also works out the end-of-term picture: how many of the remaining classes you must attend to finish at or above the minimum, how many you can skip, and the best and worst final percentages. The tables compare other common targets (65% to 90%) and show what each extra absence does to your percentage. A 75% minimum to sit end-of-term exams is common, for example at many universities in India, and 80% is also widely used; always check your own course rules.

Worked example

60 classes held with 8 missed means 52 attended, or 86.7%. Against a 75% minimum: 52 ÷ 0.75 − 60 = 9.33, so you can miss 9 more. Check: 52 of 69 is 75.36%, while a tenth miss (52 of 70) falls to 74.29%. With a 90% target instead, you would need ⌈(0.9 × 60 − 52) ÷ 0.1⌉ = 20 classes in a row.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my attendance percentage?

Divide the classes you attended by the classes held and multiply by 100. With 42 of 50 classes: 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%.

How many classes can I miss and stay at 75%?

Divide the classes you attended by 0.75 and subtract the classes held, then round down. With 42 attended out of 50: 42 ÷ 0.75 − 50 = 6, so you can miss 6 more and still be at exactly 75%.

How many classes do I need to attend to reach 75%?

Multiply the classes held by 0.75, subtract the classes attended and divide by 0.25, then round up. With 25 of 40: (30 − 25) ÷ 0.25 = 20 classes in a row.

Why does recovering take so many classes?

Each class you attend raises both the attended and the held count by one, so the percentage only creeps up. Each absence raises only the held count, so it falls faster.

Should I count excused absences?

Only if your institution does. Many schools drop excused or medical sessions from both totals, which helps your percentage; if so, leave them out of both counts.
