Bowling Handicap Calculator
Turn your league average into a handicap — the bonus pins that level the field — from your league’s basis score and percentage.
How it works
Average = ⌊total pinfall ÷ games⌋ · Handicap = ⌊(basis − average) × handicap %⌋, not below 0 · Handicap game = average + handicap
League bowling uses a handicap so bowlers of different skill can compete fairly: the further your average sits below the league’s basis score, the more bonus pins you receive each game. A typical setup is 90% of the difference from a 220 basis — a 160-average bowler gets 0.90 × (220 − 160) = 54 pins a game. Averages are truncated (not rounded) to whole pins by most leagues, and a bowler whose average meets or beats the basis receives no handicap.
Worked example
After 9 games totalling 1,440 pins, the average is 1440 ÷ 9 = 160. Against a 220 basis at 90%, the handicap is (220 − 160) × 0.90 = 54 pins. A scratch game of 170 therefore scores 224 with handicap.
Frequently asked questions
How is the average calculated?
Divide your total pinfall by the number of games bowled and drop the fraction — leagues use the whole-pin (truncated) average, so 1,444 pins over 9 games is a 160 average, not 160.4.
What basis and percentage should I use?
These are set by your league. Common values are a basis of 200, 210, 220 or 230 and a percentage of 80%, 90% or 100%. Enter the ones from your league’s rules to match its scoring exactly.
Can the handicap be negative?
No. If your average equals or exceeds the basis, the formula would give zero or a negative number, so the handicap is floored at 0 — scratch bowlers simply bowl without a bonus.
