How it works

Every leg must end on a double (D1–D20 or the 50 bull). This finds a 1–3 dart combination of singles, doubles and trebles that sums to the score and ends on a double.

In 501 and 301 you must reduce your score to exactly zero and the final dart must land in a double or the bullseye — overshooting or leaving a score of 1 “busts” the turn. This tool searches the dartboard’s segments for a route that sums to your remaining score and ends on a double, preferring higher-scoring first darts. A handful of totals between 159 and 170 (the “bogey numbers” 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159) simply cannot be finished in three darts and are flagged as such.

Worked example

On 40 the tidy finish is a single dart: double 20. On 100 a common route is treble 20 (60) then double 20 (40). On 170, the highest possible finish, you throw treble 20, treble 20, then the 50 bullseye.

Frequently asked questions

Why must the last dart be a double?

The standard rules of 501/301 (“double out”) require the dart that brings your score to zero to land in a double segment or the bullseye. If it lands elsewhere, or takes you below two, the turn busts and your score reverts to what it was at the start of the turn.

What is a bogey number?

A bogey number is a score that cannot be checked out in three darts: 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159. Players deliberately score to avoid leaving these, aiming instead for numbers with a clean two- or three-dart finish.

Is the suggested route the only one?

No — most scores have several valid finishes. This tool offers one workable route weighted toward big first darts; experienced players often choose a route that leaves a favourite double if they miss, such as keeping double 16 or double 20 in reserve.
