How it works

Calories per km ≈ body mass (kg) × 1.036 · Distance = calories ÷ calories per km

The energy cost of running is remarkably steady: it takes roughly one kilocalorie per kilogram of body weight to run one kilometre, almost regardless of how fast you go, because covering the distance is what does the work. That makes calorie burn depend mainly on how far you run and how much you weigh, not on your speed. This estimate uses gross energy cost; your net burn above resting metabolism is a little lower.

Worked example

A 70 kg runner burns about 70 × 1.036 = 73 kcal per km. To burn 500 kcal they need 500 ÷ 73 = 6.9 km, which is about 4.3 miles.

Frequently asked questions

Does running faster burn more calories per mile?

Only marginally. The energy to move your body a given distance is roughly fixed, so a fast mile and a slow mile burn a similar amount — you just finish the fast one sooner. Speed mainly affects calories burned per minute, not per mile.

Is this gross or net calorie burn?

It is gross burn, including the energy you would have spent at rest during that time. Net burn — the extra above resting metabolism — is typically around 20–30% lower.

Why does body weight matter so much?

Running is weight-bearing, so a heavier body needs more energy to move the same distance. Doubling body weight roughly doubles calories burned per kilometre.
