How it works

Individual total = per-line price × lines · Saving = individual total − family total · Per line = family total ÷ lines

Family plans spread a shared allowance across lines, so the saving grows with each person added — the comparison is the family total against what every line would cost alone. Dividing the family total by the number of lines exposes the real per-person price, which is the figure to split fairly among the group. Because the individual-line total scales linearly while the family price rises more slowly, larger groups almost always come out ahead.

Worked example

Four individual lines at $55 each total $220 a month. A $140 family plan is $35 a line, saving $80 a month — $960 a year — across the four lines.

Frequently asked questions

How should we split the family bill?

The simplest fair split is the per-line figure — total ÷ lines — so everyone pays the same. If some lines use far more data or added features, weight their share accordingly.

Do perks change the comparison?

Family plans often bundle streaming or hotspot perks. If those replace something you already pay for, subtract that value from the family cost to see the true saving.

Is it worth joining a family plan with non-family members?

Financially, yes — more lines usually means a lower per-line price. Just agree upfront on who pays and who is the account holder, since one person is liable for the whole bill.
