Cooper 12-Minute Swim Test Calculator
Rate your Cooper 12-minute swim test: enter the distance you swam in 12 minutes, your age and sex to get the Cooper fitness rating, your pace per 100 and the distance for each rating.
How it works
Distance converted to yards (1 yd = 0.9144 m) and compared with Cooper's (1982) table for your sex and age group · pace per 100 = 720 s ÷ (distance ÷ 100)
Dr Kenneth Cooper's 12-minute swim test is the pool version of his famous 12-minute run: swim as far as you can in 12 minutes using any stroke, resting if you need to, and compare the distance with age- and sex-specific norms published in The Aerobics Program for Total Well-Being (1982). The original table is in yards; this calculator converts metres for you. Because technique matters as much as fitness in water, the test correlates only moderately with VO2max and is best used as a swimming-fitness benchmark.
Worked example
A 30-year-old man swims 550 m (601 yd) in 12 minutes: in the 30–39 table Good is 550–649 yd (503–594 m), so his rating is Good, at an average pace of 2:11 /100 m. He needs 594 m to rate Excellent.

Frequently asked questions
How do I do the Cooper swim test?
Warm up, then swim continuously for 12 minutes in a pool of known length, using any stroke and resting at the wall if needed. Count lengths and add the part of the last length; enter the total in metres or yards.
What is a good 12-minute swim distance?
For men aged 20–29, 600 yd (549 m) or more is Good and 700 yd (640 m) or more is Excellent; women of the same age need 500 yd (457 m) for Good and 600 yd (549 m) for Excellent. The bar drops by about 50 yd per decade of age.
Can I convert my result to VO2max?
Not reliably. Swimming distance depends heavily on technique, so studies show only a modest correlation with VO2max (around r = 0.4). Use the rating and track your distance over time instead.
Does the pool length matter?
Slightly — more turns in a 25 m or 25 yd pool give a few extra metres from push-offs compared with a 50 m pool. Test in the same pool each time.
