How it works

buffered duration = ⌈estimate × (1 + buffer%)⌉ · deadline = start + buffered duration − 1 day

Estimates are best guesses, and unpadded ones slip more often than not. Adding a percentage buffer turns an optimistic estimate into a commitment you can actually meet — a common rule of thumb is 15–25% for well-understood work and more for anything novel or dependency-heavy. The calculator rounds the padded duration up to whole days and then projects the deadline from your start date, counting either every calendar day or only working days so the date matches how your team tracks progress.

Worked example

A 10-day estimate with a 20% buffer becomes 12 days. Starting Wednesday, September 16, 2026 and counting calendar days, the deadline is Sunday, September 27, 2026 — two days of slack built in.

Frequently asked questions

How big should the buffer be?

For familiar work, 15–25% is typical. For work with unknowns, external dependencies or a hard downstream date, 30–50% is safer. Base it on how far your past estimates have missed rather than a gut feeling.

Should I buffer each task or the whole project?

Buffering the whole project (a single shared reserve) is usually more efficient than padding every task, because not every task overruns. This calculator applies one buffer to the total estimate — the critical-chain approach.

What is the difference between calendar and working days?

Calendar days count weekends and holidays; working days count only Monday–Friday. Pick working days if your estimate was in effort days that exclude weekends, so the deadline lands on a realistic date.
