Final Exam Grade Needed Calculator
Work out the exact final-exam score you need to hit your target course grade, given the exam’s weight.
How it works
needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight
Your final course grade is the current grade counted at (1 − weight) plus the final exam counted at its weight. Rearranging for the exam score gives the formula above. A score over 100% means the target is impossible at that exam weight; a score at or below zero means you have already secured the target no matter how the exam goes.
Worked example
Current grade 87%, final worth 25%, target 90%: needed = (90 − 87 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 65.25) ÷ 0.25 = 99.0%. You would need a 99% final to reach 90% overall.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the needed score so high when I am only a few points away?
Because the final only counts for its weight. If it is worth 25%, closing a 3-point gap in the overall grade takes a 12-point swing on the exam itself — the gap is divided by the weight.
The result says over 100% — what now?
The target is unreachable through the final alone. Focus on the "best possible" line, or look for extra credit and regrades on earlier work to raise your current grade first.
Does this handle a cumulative final that replaces a midterm?
Add the replaced item’s weight to the final’s weight before running it, since the exam then effectively controls that larger share of the grade.
