Exam Grade Needed Calculator
Pick the final letter grade you want and see the exam score it takes to get there, from your current average and the exam’s remaining weight.
How it works
needed = (letter cutoff − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w · cutoffs: A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60
Instead of a numeric target, you pick the letter grade you are aiming for and the calculator uses its percentage cutoff (A = 90, B = 80, C = 70, D = 60). Your current average counts for the part of the course already graded, (1 − w), and the exam fills the remaining weight w. Solving for the exam score shows exactly what it takes to cross the letter line.
Worked example
Aiming for a B (80%) with a 78% current average and a final worth 35%: needed = (80 − 78 × 0.65) ÷ 0.35 = (80 − 50.7) ÷ 0.35 = 29.3 ÷ 0.35 = 83.7%. An 83.7% exam secures the B.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the grade-needed-on-final tool?
This one lets you aim at a letter grade — A, B, C, or D — rather than typing an exact percentage target, and it labels the exam as "remaining weight". Use whichever framing matches how you think about your goal; the underlying formula is the same.
My school’s B starts at 83%, not 80% — can I still use this?
The tool uses the common 10-point cutoffs. If your syllabus sets different lines, use the grade-needed-on-final calculator and type your exact cutoff as the target percentage.
What if several assignments remain, not just one exam?
Add up the weight of everything still ungraded and enter that as the remaining weight. The result is then the average you need across all of those items combined.
