Half Your Age Plus Seven Calculator

Apply the classic “half your age plus seven” dating rule of thumb to see the socially-teased age range for a partner — just a bit of fun.

How it works

youngest = your age ÷ 2 + 7 · oldest = (your age − 7) × 2 (the upper bound is the inverse of the lower one)

This is a well-known pop-culture saying, not real advice. The lower bound takes half your age and adds seven; the upper bound is simply the reverse of that rule, found by undoing it — subtract seven, then double. The two edges are mirror images: if person A is at the bottom of B’s range, then B is at the top of A’s. It is a bit of cultural math, and healthy relationships depend on maturity and consent, not a formula.

Worked example

At 30, the youngest is 30 ÷ 2 + 7 = 22, and the oldest is (30 − 7) × 2 = 46, giving a teased range of about 22 to 46. Notice a 46-year-old’s own lower bound is 46 ÷ 2 + 7 = 30 — the rule folds back on itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an actual rule I should follow?

No — it’s a lighthearted saying with no scientific or official standing. Compatibility and mutual respect matter far more than any age formula.

Why does the range collapse at young ages?

Below about 14 the “youngest” output exceeds your own age, so the rule stops making sense. That’s why this calculator is limited to adults and treats it strictly as a fun novelty.

Where did the rule come from?

It’s an old bit of folklore that has circulated for over a century in etiquette columns and jokes. It was never a real standard, just a memorable rhyme of arithmetic.
