How it works

Percentage = marks obtained ÷ total marks × 100 · subject-wise: Σ marks ÷ Σ maximum marks × 100 · best of five: compulsory subject + four highest others, ÷ their maximum · CGPA ≈ percentage ÷ 9.5 · needed on remaining = target% × (total + remaining) − marks obtained

A marks percentage is what you scored divided by what was available. Paste your mark sheet subject by subject and the calculator adds the marks and the maximums for you, so papers out of 80, 100 or 70 combine correctly; each subject also gets its own percentage and grade, and anything under the pass mark (33% for CBSE and most state boards) is flagged. For admissions that use the “best of five”, pick that option: by default the first line (usually English) always counts and the four highest of the rest are added, which is how CBSE describes the rule. Grades follow the CBSE nine-point school scheme (A1 for 91–100 down to E below 33) with the usual Indian divisions (60% first, 50% second, 40% third, 75% distinction), or switch to US letter grades or UK degree classes. The band table lists the minimum marks for every grade on your total, and if some papers are still to come the calculator shows what you need on them for your target.

Worked example

438 out of 600 = 73.00%: grade B1 (grade point 8), first division, about 7.68 CGPA, 162 marks lost; 450 marks would have been 75%. For best of five, English 85, Hindi 72, Maths 95, Science 88, Social Science 79 and IT 91 count English plus Maths, IT, Science and Social Science: 85 + 95 + 91 + 88 + 79 = 438 of 500 = 87.6%, compared with 510 of 600 = 85% for all six.

Frequently asked questions

How is the “best of five” percentage calculated?

Take the compulsory language (usually English), add your four highest other subjects, and divide by the five maximums (500 when each paper is out of 100). Paste the subjects, choose “Best five” and keep “Always count the first subject” on with English on the first line.

Do practicals and internal marks count?

Yes, when they are part of the subject total on the mark sheet. Enter the combined marks for each subject (theory + practical + internal) against its full maximum, for example “Physics 84/100”.

How do I convert my percentage to CGPA?

CBSE’s factor is 9.5, so CGPA ≈ percentage ÷ 9.5 and percentage ≈ CGPA × 9.5. 73% is about 7.68. Many universities publish their own conversion, so use theirs when one exists.

What percentage is first division or distinction?

Most Indian boards and universities call 60% and above first division, 50–59% second division and 40–49% third division, and 75% or more distinction. Some universities use 45% for second division, so check your institution’s rules.

How many marks do I need in the remaining papers?

Enter the total marks still to be examined and your target under More options. The calculator works out target% × (current total + remaining) minus what you already have, and tells you if it is out of reach.
