How it works

start = day after notice is given (or the same day, or the 1st of next month) · weeks/days: end = start + notice − 1 day · calendar months: the day before the same date n months on · working days: count Mon–Fri, skipping listed holidays · UK statutory minimum (employer): 1 week from 1 month’s service, 1 week per complete year from 2 years, max 12 weeks; (employee): 1 week · last working day = end date, moved back past weekends and holidays

A notice period is a span of time, and disputes about the leaving date almost always come down to when the span starts and whether it is counted in days, weeks or months. The usual convention — and GOV.UK’s guidance for the UK — is that the clock starts the day after the employer receives written notice, so a one-month notice given on 10 March runs from 11 March and ends on 10 April, the day before the same date a month on. Some contracts run notice from the first of the following month, which can add weeks. Choose the UK statutory minimum to get the legal floor from your start date: an employee with at least a month’s service must give one week, while an employer must give one week from one month to two years, then a week for every complete year, up to twelve weeks. The longer of the contract and the statute always applies, and “Longer of contract and UK statutory” picks it for you. Working-day counting excludes weekends; turn on England & Wales bank holidays or paste your own dates under More options if your contract also excludes public holidays. Untaken leave can be spent at the end of the period to leave earlier in practice while staying employed to the end date, and the calculator also gives your earliest start at a new job, gross pay for the notice period and the latest day to hand in notice to leave by a chosen date.

Worked example

Notice handed in on Tuesday 10 March 2026 with a one-calendar-month period starting the next day runs from 11 March and employment ends on Friday 10 April 2026 — also the last working day, so a new job could start on Monday 13 April. With five days of untaken holiday taken at the end, the last day in the office is 3 April. To leave by 30 April instead, notice would have to be given by 31 March. An employer dismissing someone who started on 1 September 2020 must give at least 5 weeks’ statutory notice on 10 March 2026 (five complete years), ending on 14 April.

Frequently asked questions

Does my notice period start the day I hand it in or the next day?

Usually the next day, unless the contract states otherwise or your employer agrees. In the UK, GOV.UK says notice usually runs from the start of the day after you hand it in. Giving notice in writing with a clear “my last day will be …” avoids the argument.

What is the UK statutory minimum notice period?

If you resign after at least a month in the job, you must give at least one week. Your employer must give you at least one week if you have worked there between one month and two years, one week for each complete year between two and twelve years, and twelve weeks after twelve years. A longer period in your contract replaces these minimums; a shorter one does not.

Can I leave earlier than the end date?

Only by agreement (or by taking accrued holiday). Walking out early is a breach of contract; the employer may withhold pay for the unworked period, though in practice many agree a shorter period.

Are bank holidays counted in a notice period?

A notice period in weeks or months runs through weekends and bank holidays — they are part of the period. They only matter if your contract counts working days, or for finding your last working day. Turn on England & Wales bank holidays, or list your own dates, under More options.

What if the last day of notice falls on a weekend?

Employment still ends on that date and you are paid to it, but your last working day is the Friday before (or earlier if that is a holiday). The calculator shows both dates separately.
