Overtime Hours Calculator
Split total hours worked into regular and overtime past a weekly threshold, and see the 1.5× paid-hour equivalent.
How it works
overtime = max(0, total − threshold) · regular = total − overtime · paid-hour equivalent = regular + overtime × multiplier
Any hours above the threshold — 40 a week under the US Fair Labor Standards Act — are overtime, and the rest are regular. Multiplying the overtime hours by the premium rate (1.5× for time-and-a-half) and adding the regular hours gives the "paid-hour equivalent": how many straight-time hours your pay works out to. That last figure is handy for comparing a week of overtime against a flat-rate week without needing your actual wage.
Worked example
Work 47.5 hours with overtime after 40 at 1.5×: 7.5 hours are overtime and 40 are regular. The paid-hour equivalent is 40 + 7.5 × 1.5 = 51.25 hours, so overtime adds 3.75 extra paid hours.
Frequently asked questions
Does this figure out my pay?
It works in hours, not money. Multiply the paid-hour equivalent by your straight-time rate to get gross pay, or the regular and overtime hours by their own rates.
What threshold should I use?
The US federal rule is 40 hours per week. Some states or contracts use daily thresholds or a lower weekly number — set the field to whatever applies to you.
What is the multiplier for double time?
Set it to 2 for double time, or 1.5 for the standard time-and-a-half. Some agreements pay double time only past a higher number of hours.
