Time Card & Work Hours Calculator
Add up hours worked from clock-in and clock-out times, subtract your break, and get total hours and gross pay — overnight shifts included.
How it works
Shift = clock out − clock in (add 24 h if it crosses midnight) · Worked = shift − break · Decimal hours = worked ÷ 60 · Pay = hours × rate
A time card converts wall-clock in and out stamps into paid hours by subtracting any unpaid break and expressing the remainder in decimal hours, since payroll multiplies dollars by hours, not by hours-and-minutes. Overnight shifts need care: when the clock-out is earlier than the clock-in, a full day is added so the math wraps correctly past midnight. Decimal hours make the pay calculation exact — 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours, not 7.30.
Worked example
Clocking in at 09:00 and out at 17:00 is an 8-hour span. Subtract a 30-minute unpaid break for 7h 30m worked, which is 7.5 decimal hours. At $20/hr that is 7.5 × $20 = $150 gross for the shift.
Frequently asked questions
How does it handle overnight shifts?
If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time — say in at 22:00 and out at 06:00 — the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours, giving the correct 8-hour span rather than a negative one.
Why convert to decimal hours?
Minutes must become a fraction of an hour before multiplying by a pay rate. 15 minutes is 0.25 hour, 30 is 0.5, 45 is 0.75. Multiplying a rate by "7.30" for 7h 30m would underpay — the correct figure is 7.5.
Does this calculate overtime?
No — it totals a single shift’s hours and straight-time pay. For weekly overtime past 40 hours at time-and-a-half, sum your daily results and apply your jurisdiction’s overtime rules, or use a dedicated overtime calculator.
