Score Needed on Next Test Calculator
Find the score you need on your next test to raise your average to the target you want.
How it works
needed score = target × (tests taken + 1) − current average × tests taken
Your average after the next test is the total of every score divided by the new test count. Setting that equal to your target and solving for the unknown next score gives the mark you must earn. Because the new score is diluted by all the tests already taken, closing a gap gets harder the more tests are behind you — the same next score moves a two-test average far more than a ten-test one. If the answer exceeds the maximum score, one test cannot get you there.
Worked example
After 4 tests averaging 82, you want an 85 average across all 5. You need 85 × 5 − 82 × 4 = 425 − 328 = 97 on the next test — high, but reachable if the maximum is 100.
Frequently asked questions
What if the required score is over 100?
Then a single test cannot lift your average to the target, because even a perfect score falls short. Lower the target, or plan to raise the average gradually across several more tests.
Does this assume every test is weighted equally?
Yes — it treats each test as one equal entry in a simple average. If your tests carry different weights, use the weighted-grade calculator instead so each score counts by its weight.
How is this different from a final-grade calculator?
A final-grade calculator targets a course grade where the final exam has a set weight. This tool works with a running test average where each test counts equally and you are adding one more.
