Numerologists read the vowels of the full birth name as the "soul urge" or "heart's desire" — what you inwardly want — and the consonants as the "personality" others see; together they make the expression (destiny) number. The calculator uses the standard Pythagorean letter chart, works with accented names (José, Núñez) and lets you decide how to treat Y, which schools disagree about. These numbers are symbolic and for entertainment; there is no evidence that names shape personality.

Worked example

MARIA ELENA LOPEZ: vowels A, I, A + E, E, A + O, E = 1 + 9 + 1 + 5 + 5 + 1 + 6 + 5 = 33 — a master number, so the soul urge is 33. The consonants M, R, L, N, L, P, Z total 4 + 9 + 3 + 5 + 3 + 7 + 8 = 39 → 12 → 3 (personality 3), and all letters give 72 → 9 (expression 9).

Frequently asked questions

Should I use my birth name or my current name?

Traditional numerology uses the full name on your birth certificate for the soul urge and expression numbers; your current or married name is read as a secondary influence. Try both.

Is Y a vowel in numerology?

Schools differ. Many treat Y as a vowel when it sounds like one and no other vowel is next to it (as in "Lynn"), and as a consonant otherwise (as in "Yolanda"). Choose the option that fits your name.

What is the difference between soul urge and expression numbers?

The soul urge uses only vowels and is said to show inner motivation; the expression (destiny) number uses all letters and is said to show talents and the way you act in the world.

Does numerology work?
