How it works

Hebrew (Mispar Hechrachi): א=1 … ט=9, י=10 … צ=90, ק=100 … ת=400; final forms ך ם ן ף ץ = their normal letters · Mispar Gadol: finals ך=500, ם=600, ן=700, ף=800, ץ=900 · Mispar Katan: drop the zeros (י=1, ק=1, ת=4) · English ordinal: A=1 … Z=26; full reduction: A=1 … I=9, J=1 …; English gematria: ordinal × 6 · value = sum of the letters (vowel points ignored)

Gematria is the ancient practice of giving each letter a number and reading meaning into words with equal totals. In Hebrew it is a traditional method of rabbinic and kabbalistic interpretation (for example חי, "life" = 18, which is why gifts are often given in multiples of 18), and the standard values follow the order of the alphabet in steps of 1, 10 and 100. English "gematria" systems are modern inventions modelled on it. The arithmetic here is exact; any meaning drawn from matching numbers is a matter of tradition, faith or entertainment, not evidence.

Worked example

שלום (shalom, "peace") = ש 300 + ל 30 + ו 6 + ם 40 = 376 in standard gematria (Mispar Hechrachi). With the final mem counted as 600 (Mispar Gadol) it is 936, and in Mispar Katan (3 + 3 + 6 + 4) it is 16. The digital root of 376 is 7.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gematria of my name?

Type your name in Hebrew letters for traditional Hebrew gematria, or in Latin letters and choose an English method. Hebrew names are normally spelled without vowel points; the calculator ignores any points you include.

Why is 18 lucky in Judaism?

Because חי (chai, "alive") is ח = 8 plus י = 10 = 18. Charitable gifts are often given in multiples of 18 ("chai").

What is the difference between Mispar Hechrachi and Mispar Gadol?

Hechrachi (standard) gives the five final letters the same values as their regular forms. Gadol ("large") continues the count for them — ך 500, ם 600, ן 700, ף 800, ץ 900.

Is there a single correct English gematria?

No. English has no traditional system; simple ordinal (A = 1 to Z = 26), reduction (1–9) and the ×6 "English gematria" are modern conventions used on gematria websites. Different methods give different values for the same word.
