Square Fee Calculator
Square processing fees for in-person tap/dip/swipe, online, keyed-in and invoice payments — fee per sale, what you keep, and the surcharge to pass fees on.
How it works
Fee = amount × rate + fixed (in-person 2.6% + 15¢; online 2.9% + 30¢; keyed 3.5% + 15¢)
Square charges a flat blended rate per transaction with no monthly fee on the free plan: 2.6% + 15¢ for card-present payments, 2.9% + 30¢ online and 3.5% + 15¢ when a card number is typed in (higher fraud risk). The fixed cent portion makes small tickets expensive — a $5 coffee pays 5.6%. Businesses over roughly $250k a year can negotiate custom rates.
Worked example
$65 tapped in person: 65 × 2.6% + $0.15 = $1.84 (2.83%); you receive $63.16.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pass the fee to the customer?
Surcharging is allowed in most US states with disclosure (not on debit cards); the “charge this” figure grosses up so you net the sale amount.
Does Square charge for refunds?
Square returns the processing fee on refunds — one advantage over some competitors.
