How it works

Goods & services (personal profile): fee = 2.99% × amount · Business or charity profile: fee = 1.9% × amount + $0.10 · Tap to Pay: 2.29% + $0.09 · Credit-card-funded send: 3% × amount, added to what you pay · Instant transfer: 1.75% × amount, at least $0.25 and at most $25 · Amount to request to keep K = K ÷ (1 − rate) + fixed fee ÷ (1 − rate), rounded up to the cent

Venmo is free for ordinary payments between friends funded by your Venmo balance, a bank account or a debit card. Fees apply in four situations. When a buyer marks a payment to your personal profile as goods and services, you pay a 2.99% seller fee and the buyer gets Purchase Protection. A business or charity profile pays 1.9% + 10¢ on every payment it receives, and Tap to Pay in person costs 2.29% + 9¢. Anyone who funds a payment with a credit card pays 3% on top. Finally, moving your balance to the bank is free in 1–3 business days, or 1.75% for an instant transfer, never less than 25¢ or more than $25. The calculator works in either direction. Enter a payment to see the fee and what you keep, or switch to “Amount I want to keep” to find the smallest request that leaves you that much after the fee (and after an instant transfer, if you choose one). The table compares every transaction type for the same amount, which shows quickly why asking a buyer to pay a business profile, or cashing out with a standard transfer, can save money. Rates are Venmo’s published US fee schedule as checked in October 2026; Venmo can change them, so check the fee it shows before you confirm.

Worked example

A buyer sends $120 marked as goods and services to your personal profile. The fee is $120 × 2.99% = $3.588, rounded to $3.59, so you receive $116.41 (a 2.99% effective rate). Cashing that out instantly would cost another $116.41 × 1.75% = $2.04, leaving $114.37; the free standard transfer leaves the full $116.41. To net the full $120 you would need to request $120 ÷ 0.9701 = $123.70. The same $120 paid to a business profile would cost $120 × 1.9% + $0.10 = $2.38.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Venmo charge for goods and services?

Payments marked as goods and services to a personal profile cost the seller 2.99% of the payment, with no fixed fee: $2.99 on $100. The buyer pays nothing extra unless they fund the payment with a credit card (3%). Business profiles pay 1.9% + 10¢ instead.

How much does Venmo charge for an instant transfer?

An instant transfer to an eligible bank account or debit card costs 1.75% of the amount, with a minimum fee of 25¢ and a maximum of $25. A $100 transfer costs $1.75 and anything above about $1,429 hits the $25 cap. The standard transfer is free and usually takes 1–3 business days.

Is it free to send money on Venmo?

Yes, when you pay from your Venmo balance, a linked bank account or a debit card. Funding a payment with a credit card adds a 3% fee, which you pay on top of the amount sent.

How do I calculate what to charge to cover the Venmo fee?

Divide the amount you want to keep by (1 − fee rate) and add the fixed fee divided by the same number. For goods and services, $100 ÷ 0.9701 = $103.08 leaves you $100.00 after the 2.99% fee. Choose “Amount I want to keep” above and the calculator rounds to the cent for you.

Can buyers avoid the fee by sending as friends?

They can, but the payment then has no Purchase Protection for the buyer and no seller protection for you, and Venmo’s terms do not allow personal profiles to be used mainly for business. Sellers who take regular payments should use a business profile, which costs 1.9% + 10¢.

Will I get a tax form for Venmo payments?

Goods-and-services payments and business-profile payments are reported on Form 1099-K once they pass the IRS reporting threshold; after the 2025 federal change that threshold is more than $20,000 and more than 200 payments in a calendar year, and some states use lower limits. Personal payments between friends are not reported. Fees you pay may be deductible business expenses.
