Time and a Half Calculator
Find your time-and-a-half (1.5×) and double-time (2×) hourly rates from an hourly wage or annual salary, the pay for your overtime hours, the premium portion and a quick pay table by hours.
How it works
time-and-a-half rate = regular rate × 1.5 · double-time rate = regular rate × 2 · regular rate from salary = annual salary ÷ (52 × weekly hours) · overtime pay = hours × overtime rate · premium = hours × regular rate × 0.5 (or × 1 at double time)
"Time and a half" means each overtime hour is paid at one and a half times the regular hourly rate; double time pays twice the rate. They are the two most common overtime multipliers worldwide — the US Fair Labor Standards Act requires at least 1.5× for hours over 40 a week for non-exempt employees, and many contracts, collective agreements and national laws use 1.5× for ordinary overtime and 2× for Sundays, holidays or long days. The premium is the extra half (or whole) rate on top of the straight-time pay you would earn for those hours anyway.
Worked example
You earn $20.00 an hour. Time and a half is $20.00 × 1.5 = $30.00/h and double time is $40.00/h. Ten overtime hours at time and a half pay 10 × $30.00 = $300.00, of which $100.00 is the overtime premium above your regular pay. On a $52,000 salary with a 40-hour week the regular rate is also $25.00/h, so time and a half would be $37.50/h.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate time and a half?
Multiply your regular hourly rate by 1.5. At $18/h, time and a half is $27/h; at $25/h it is $37.50/h. Then multiply by the number of overtime hours to get overtime pay.
What is the difference between time and a half and double time?
Time and a half pays 150% of the regular rate (1.5×); double time pays 200% (2×). Double time is common for holidays, Sundays or hours beyond a daily limit, depending on the contract or local law.
How do I work out time and a half on a salary?
First turn the salary into an hourly rate: annual salary ÷ (52 × weekly hours). A $52,000 salary on 40 hours is $25/h, so time and a half is $37.50/h. Whether salaried staff get overtime at all depends on their contract and local rules.
Is time and a half paid on all hours?
No — only on hours that count as overtime, such as hours over 40 a week or over 8 a day, depending on where you work. Regular hours stay at the normal rate.
What is the overtime premium?
The part of overtime pay above the straight-time rate: the extra 0.5× at time and a half, or the extra 1× at double time. Some regulations and bonus rules refer to the premium separately from the base pay for those hours.
