Time Left With Parents Calculator
How many more times will you see your parents? Estimate the visits and days together left from a parent’s age, life expectancy and how often you visit — the “tail end” idea in numbers.
How it works
Years left = expected age − current age · visits left = years left × visits per year · days together = visits left × days per visit
Tim Urban’s essay “The Tail End” pointed out that by the time we leave home we have often already used most of the in-person time we will ever spend with our parents. This calculator multiplies the years a parent can expect to live by how often you actually see them. Life expectancy rises with age — in the US a 60-year-old can expect about 22 more years on average (CDC life tables) — and individual health matters far more than any average, so treat the figure as a prompt, not a prediction.
Worked example
A 60-year-old parent expected to live to 82 has 22 years left. Visiting 4 times a year for 3 days each gives 22 × 4 = 88 visits and 264 days together; doubling the visits would make it 176.

Frequently asked questions
How many times will I see my parents again?
Multiply the years they can expect to live by how many times a year you see them. A parent with 20 years left whom you see 3 times a year: about 60 more visits.
What life expectancy should I use?
Use remaining life expectancy for their current age and sex from your country’s life tables (CDC, INE, INEGI, DANE…). It is higher than life expectancy at birth: someone who has reached 70 can usually expect another 14 to 17 years.
What is “The Tail End”?
An essay by Tim Urban (Wait But Why, 2015) showing that after childhood most of the time we will spend with our parents is already behind us, because we see them only a few days a year.
How can I increase the time left together?
Visit more often, stay longer, live closer, or add regular calls and video chats; even one extra visit a year adds dozens of days over two decades.
