How it works

Premium ≈ trip cost × base rate% × age factor · base rate = 5% / 7% / 10% by coverage · age factor rises with age

Travel insurance is priced mainly off the non-refundable trip cost you are protecting, which is why comprehensive plans typically land between 4% and 10% of the trip. Age is the other big lever: risk of medical claims climbs steeply after 60, so insurers multiply the premium for older travelers. This is a planning estimate to sanity-check quotes — the real price also depends on trip length, destination, medical history and the specific coverage limits.

Worked example

A $4,000 trip with standard coverage (7%) for a 40-year-old carries a 1.2 age factor: 4,000 × 0.07 × 1.2 = about $336, or roughly 8.4% of the trip cost.

Frequently asked questions

What does the premium actually depend on?

Chiefly the prepaid, non-refundable trip cost, the travelers' ages, trip length and destination, and the coverage limits for medical and cancellation. This tool models the first two, which drive most of the variation.

Is travel insurance worth it?

It is most valuable when a large share of your trip is prepaid and non-refundable, when travelling somewhere with expensive medical care, or for older travelers. For a cheap, fully refundable trip the case is weaker.

Why does age raise the price so much?

The costliest travel claims are emergency medical and evacuation, and their likelihood rises sharply with age. Many insurers step up pricing at 60, 65 and 70, which this calculator approximates with an age factor.
