Turkey Size Per Person Calculator: How Big a Turkey to Buy
How big a turkey to buy for Thanksgiving or Christmas from your guest count: adults and children, leftovers, whole bird, pre-stuffed, bone-in or boneless breast, when to split into two birds, plus USDA thawing and roasting times.
How it works
Turkey (lb) = adults × per-adult amount + children × half of it, rounded up · per adult: whole bird 1 lb, pre-stuffed 1.25 lb, bone-in breast 0.75 lb, boneless 0.5 lb · × 1.5 for leftovers · fridge thawing = 1 day per 4–5 lb · cold water = 30 min per lb
USDA and most turkey brands plan about 1 pound of whole raw turkey per person for the meal. That figure is much more than anyone eats because a whole bird is largely bone, skin and drippings. Children eat about half an adult portion. If you want leftovers for sandwiches, multiply by 1.5 (about 1.5 lb per adult). Cuts with less bone need less: about ¾ lb of bone-in breast or ½ lb of boneless breast per adult, while frozen pre-stuffed turkeys need about 1¼ lb because the stuffing is part of the weight. The calculator rounds up to a whole pound and to a realistic smallest whole bird (8 lb). Above 20 lb it suggests two smaller birds, which cook more evenly and fit standard ovens. The thawing and roasting times come from the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service: about 24 hours in the fridge for every 4 to 5 pounds, 30 minutes per pound in cold water, and the 325 °F roasting timetable. Always finish with a thermometer: 165 °F in the breast, thigh and wing.
Worked example
Default: 8 adults and 4 children, leftovers, whole turkey. Per adult = 1 lb × 1.5 = 1.5 lb; per child = 0.75 lb. Total = 8 × 1.5 + 4 × 0.75 = 12 + 3 = 15 lb, so buy a 15 lb turkey. A 15 lb bird needs 3–4 days to thaw in the fridge (or 7 h 30 min in cold water) and roasts in 3 h 45 min–4 h 15 min at 325 °F unstuffed. Without leftovers the same group needs 10 lb.

Frequently asked questions
How many pounds of turkey per person?
About 1 pound of whole raw turkey per person for the meal, and about 1.5 pounds if you want leftovers. Count young children at half. Some cooks plan up to 2 pounds per person for generous leftovers.
What size turkey do I need for 10 people?
A 10 lb turkey for the meal alone, or about 15 lb with leftovers. If several of the 10 are children, you can go a couple of pounds smaller.
How much turkey breast per person?
About ¾ lb of bone-in breast or ½ lb of boneless breast per person, and about 50% more for leftovers. Breasts are a good choice for small groups or for white-meat fans next to a whole bird.
How long does a turkey take to thaw?
In the refrigerator, about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds, so a 15 lb turkey needs 3 to 4 days. In cold water, about 30 minutes per pound with the water changed every 30 minutes, and cook it right away. Never thaw a turkey on the counter.
Is one big turkey or two small ones better?
Above about 20 lb a single bird cooks unevenly: the breast dries out before the thighs are done, and it may not fit your oven. Two 12 to 14 lb birds feed the same crowd and cook faster.
How long do I roast a turkey?
At 325 °F, USDA times for an unstuffed whole turkey are 2¾ to 3 hours for 8 to 12 lb, 3 to 3¾ hours for 12 to 14 lb, 3¾ to 4¼ hours for 14 to 18 lb, 4¼ to 4½ hours for 18 to 20 lb and 4½ to 5 hours for 20 to 24 lb. A stuffed bird takes a little longer. The thermometer, not the clock, decides: 165 °F.
