How it works

whole years married = anniversaries already reached · next anniversary = whole years + 1, on the same month and day as the wedding (February 29 → February 28 or March 1 in common years) · days to go = anniversary date − today · gifts from the traditional, modern, gemstone and flower lists for that year

The calculator counts the anniversaries you have already reached, then looks ahead to the next one — the same month and day you married — and counts the days and weeks to it. You can also ask for any anniversary, such as your 25th or 50th, to see the date and weekday it falls on. Each anniversary carries a name and a traditional gift theme (paper for the first, wood for the fifth, silver for the twenty-fifth), a modern theme from the 1937 jewellers’ list that covers every year up to the 50th, and, for many years, a gemstone and a flower from newer lists. After the 15th the traditional list only names every fifth year, so in-between years show the modern theme only. The results also show how long you have been married in years, months and days, the next 1,000-day milestone, and two tables: your next anniversaries with their gifts, and the big milestones with their dates.

Worked example

Married June 20, 2015 and checked on September 16, 2026: you have completed 11 years, so your 12th anniversary — the silk anniversary, on Sunday, June 20, 2027 — is next, 277 days away. The traditional 12-year gift is silk or linen, the modern one pearls, the gemstone jade and the flower the peony. Your 25th (silver) anniversary falls on Wednesday, June 20, 2040. You had been married for 11 years, 2 months and 27 days, or 4,106 days, and reach 5,000 days on February 26, 2029.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the traditional gift themes come from?

The traditional list grew out of older European and Victorian customs for the early years (paper, cotton, leather…) and the big milestones (silver, gold, diamond). A 1937 list from the American National Retail Jewelers Association added a “modern” theme for every year up to the 50th. Gemstone and flower lists are more recent and vary between sources.

What is the gift for a 25th and 50th anniversary?

Silver for the 25th (sterling silver in the modern list) and gold for the 50th in both lists — which is why they are called the silver and golden anniversaries.

Why is there no traditional gift for some years?

After the 15th year the traditional list jumps to five-year milestones (20th china, 25th silver, 30th pearl…). For years like the 17th or 23rd, the modern list (furniture, silver plate) is the usual guide.

Can I see when a future anniversary falls?

Yes. Choose “A specific anniversary” and enter the number, for example 25, to get its date, weekday, days to go and gifts. The milestone table also lists the 1st to the 75th at five-year steps.

What if we married on February 29?

In common years the anniversary is counted on February 28 by default; under More options you can switch to March 1. In leap years it lands on the real February 29.
