How it works

Signs apart = shortest distance around the zodiac (0–6) · 0 = conjunction 70%, 1 = semi-sextile 50%, 2 = sextile 80%, 3 = square 40%, 4 = trine 90%, 5 = quincunx 35%, 6 = opposition 65%

Traditional astrology judges two signs by the angle between them: signs four apart (trine) share an element — fire, earth, air or water — and are considered the most harmonious; signs two apart (sextile) have compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water); signs three apart (square) share a modality but clash in element. The percentages are a fixed scale that ranks these classical aspects, not a measured probability. Controlled studies, such as Shawn Carlson’s double-blind test published in Nature (1985), found no evidence that astrology predicts personality or relationships, so treat this as entertainment.

Worked example

Aries and Leo are four signs apart, a trine: both are fire signs (Aries cardinal, Leo fixed), so the classic reading is natural harmony and easy flow, scored 90%.

Frequently asked questions

Which zodiac signs are most compatible?

In classical astrology, signs of the same element (trines) are seen as the best match: Aries–Leo–Sagittarius, Taurus–Virgo–Capricorn, Gemini–Libra–Aquarius and Cancer–Scorpio–Pisces. Fire with air and earth with water (sextiles) also rate well.

Which signs are least compatible?

Signs three apart (squares, such as Aries and Cancer) and five apart (quincunx, such as Aries and Virgo) are traditionally seen as the most challenging pairs.

Do opposite signs attract?

Opposite signs (six apart, such as Aries and Libra) are traditionally read as a strong mutual attraction that balances each other, with tension to work through.

Is zodiac compatibility real?

There is no scientific evidence for it. Large studies of marriage and divorce records have found no link between partners’ sun signs and relationship success.
