Cart Abandonment Rate Calculator
Calculate your shopping cart abandonment rate from carts created and completed orders, the revenue left in abandoned carts, and how much a recovery email or retargeting flow could win back.
How it works
Cart abandonment rate = (1 − completed purchases ÷ carts created) × 100 · Abandoned carts = carts − purchases · Revenue left = abandoned carts × average order value · Recovered revenue = revenue left × recovery rate
Cart abandonment rate is the share of shoppers who add something to the cart but never finish checkout. Baymard Institute's average across dozens of studies is about 70%, so most stores lose seven of every ten carts; the most common reasons are unexpected extra costs (shipping, taxes, fees), forced account creation and slow or confusing checkouts. Count only sessions with a cart, and measure purchases over the same period and channel.
Worked example
If shoppers created 1,200 carts and 360 turned into orders, the abandonment rate is (1 − 360 ÷ 1,200) × 100 = 70.00%. The 840 abandoned carts at a $75 average order hold $63,000.00 of revenue; recovering 10% of them would bring back $6,300.00.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate cart abandonment rate?
Divide completed purchases by shopping carts created, subtract from 1 and multiply by 100. With 360 orders from 1,200 carts the rate is 70%.
What is a good cart abandonment rate?
The documented average is about 70%. Below 60–65% is strong for most stores; mobile traffic and high-ticket products usually run higher than desktop and low-price items.
What causes most cart abandonment?
Extra costs revealed at checkout (shipping, taxes, fees) top every survey, followed by having to create an account, slow delivery, a long or complicated checkout, and not trusting the site with card details.
How much revenue can abandoned-cart emails recover?
Reminder sequences typically win back a single-digit to low-double-digit percentage of abandoned carts. Enter your own recovery rate to size the opportunity before buying tools.
