How it works

percentage ≈ GPA ÷ scale maximum × 100

The quickest GPA-to-percentage conversion divides your GPA by the top of its scale and multiplies by 100, so a 4.0 maps to 100% and a 3.0 to 75% on a 4.0 scale. It is only an estimate: real transcripts define letter bands (an A is 93–100%, not a single point), so a linear conversion sits a little below what a band-midpoint method would give. Use it for a ballpark on applications that ask for a percentage, and quote your official figure where one exists.

Worked example

A 3.5 GPA on the 4.0 scale: 3.5 ÷ 4.0 × 100 = 87.5%. On a weighted 5.0 scale the same 3.5 would convert to 3.5 ÷ 5.0 × 100 = 70%.

Frequently asked questions

Why do different converters give different percentages?

There is no single official formula. Some use this linear method, others use the WES 4.0-scale table or India’s CGPA × 9.5 rule for 10-point scales. Always follow the specific conversion your target institution requests.

Which scale should I pick?

Use 4.0 for a standard unweighted US college GPA, and 5.0 only if your GPA is a weighted high-school figure where honors and AP courses can exceed 4.0.

Is a linear conversion accurate enough for applications?

For a rough equivalence, yes. For anything official — visas, credential evaluation, scholarships — use your school’s published percentage or a recognized evaluator rather than an estimate.
