Grade Scale Converter

Convert a grade from one grading scale to another — 0–20, 1–7, 0–5, 0–10, 1–10 or 0–100 — either proportionally or with the passing marks lined up, plus a full conversion table.

How it works

Proportional: new = new min + (grade − old min) ÷ (old max − old min) × (new max − new min) · Passing marks aligned: if grade ≥ old pass, new = new pass + (grade − old pass) ÷ (old max − old pass) × (new max − new pass); otherwise new = new min + (grade − old min) ÷ (old pass − old min) × (new pass − new min)

A straight proportional conversion keeps the same position on the scale, but grading systems put the pass mark in different places (11 of 20 in Peru, 4.0 of 7 in Chile, 3.0 of 5 in Colombia, 5 of 10 in Spain, 6 of 10 in Mexico), so a passing grade can come out as a fail. The two-segment method maps the pass mark onto the pass mark and stretches the passing and failing ranges separately, the same idea used by the German “modified Bavarian formula” and by many university equivalence tables. Official equivalences are set by each ministry or university, so use the result as a guide.

Worked example

A 14 on Peru’s 0–20 scale (pass 11) converted to Chile’s 1–7 scale (pass 4.0): it is 3 points above the pass mark out of the 9-point passing range, so 4 + 3 ÷ 9 × 3 = 5.00. A straight proportional conversion would give 1 + 14 ÷ 20 × 6 = 5.20, and 14 sits at 70.00% of the original scale.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a grade from one scale to another?

Find where the grade sits on its scale and put it at the same place on the new one. Proportionally, 14 out of 20 is 70%, which is 7 on a 0–10 scale. If the pass marks differ, line them up first so a pass stays a pass.

How do I convert a 1–7 Chilean grade to a 1–10 or 0–10 scale?

Enter 1 and 7 as the original scale with 4 as the passing grade, and the target scale with its own pass mark (for example 0–10 with 5). A 5.5 in Chile becomes 7.50 on a 0–10 scale with 5 as the pass mark.

How do I convert a grade out of 20 into a grade out of 10?

Divide by 2 for a straight conversion (14/20 = 7/10). If the 0–20 scale passes at 11 and the 0–10 scale at 5, the pass-aligned value is 5 + (14 − 11) ÷ 9 × 5 = 6.67.

Which method should I use?

Use the passing-marks-aligned method when the two systems pass at different points of the scale, which is the usual case between countries. Use the proportional method for a simple percentage-style rescale inside one system.

Is this an official equivalence?

No. Ministries of education and universities publish their own equivalence tables for transcripts and scholarships; check them for official purposes.
