How it works

plus/minus bands: A 93+, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80, C+ 77, C 73, C- 70, D 63, F <60

Most U.S. schools translate a percentage into a letter using fixed cutoffs, and the plus/minus version splits each letter into three bands so a high B (B+) is distinguished from a low one (B-). Each letter also carries a GPA value on the 4.0 scale — an A- is 3.7, a B+ is 3.3 — which is what actually feeds your GPA. The simple scale collapses the pluses and minuses into whole letters at every ten-point step.

Worked example

A score of 87% lands in the 87–89 band on the plus/minus scale, which is a B+, worth 3.3 grade points. On the simple scale the same 87% is just a B, worth 3.0.

Frequently asked questions

Is 90% an A or an A-?

On the plus/minus scale, 90–92 is an A- (3.7 GPA points) and 93+ is a full A (4.0). On the simple scale, anything 90 and above is a plain A.

Do all schools use the same cutoffs?

No. The bands here are the most common U.S. convention, but individual schools and instructors set their own — some start A at 94, others use a 7-point spread. Always check your syllabus for the exact scale.

Why does an A+ still count as 4.0?

On the standard 4.0 scale the A+ and A both map to 4.0, because the scale caps there. Some schools award 4.3 for an A+, but most do not let it exceed 4.0 in GPA calculations.
