Grade Weighting by Category Calculator
Combine your homework, quiz, exam and project averages by their syllabus weights into one true course grade.
How it works
Grade = Σ(category average × category weight) ÷ Σ(category weights)
A weighted grade is a weighted average: each category average is multiplied by its share of the grade, the products are summed, then divided by the total weight. Dividing by the total weight (rather than assuming it is exactly 100) means the answer is still correct even if the entered weights do not add to 100. The heaviest category moves your final grade the most, which is why a strong homework average cannot rescue a weak final exam when exams dominate the syllabus.
Worked example
With homework 92% (20%), quizzes 85% (20%), exams 78% (40%) and projects 88% (20%): the weighted sum is 92·20 + 85·20 + 78·40 + 88·20 = 1840 + 1700 + 3120 + 1760 = 8420, divided by 100 = 84.2%, a B.
Frequently asked questions
What if my category weights do not add up to 100%?
This calculator divides by whatever the weights actually sum to, so the result stays valid. If your syllabus intends the weights to total 100%, double-check them — a missing category means the grade is being computed on the wrong base.
Why does one strong category barely move my grade?
Because its weight is small. A 100% homework average that is only worth 10% of the course can raise your total by at most a few points. Focus effort on the heaviest categories to move the grade the most.
Is a weighted grade the same as a simple average?
Only when every category has equal weight. As soon as exams are worth more than quizzes, a simple average of the percentages will overstate or understate your true grade.
