How it works

Family total = base + add-on × additional members · Members = 1 + additional · Per person = family total ÷ members · Saving = individual price × members − family total

Gyms usually price a family or household membership as a base rate covering one person plus a discounted add-on for each extra member. The per-head cost is the family total divided by everyone covered, and it only beats separate memberships when the add-on price is well below a standalone rate. If your gym's add-on is close to the individual price, separate memberships may be no more expensive and more flexible.

Worked example

A $60 base plus $25 for each of 2 extra members is $60 + $50 = $110 for 3 people, or about $36.67 each. Three individual memberships at $40 would cost $120, so the family plan saves $10 a month — a modest but real discount.

Frequently asked questions

When is a family gym plan worth it?

When the per-member add-on is meaningfully cheaper than a standalone membership and everyone actually goes. If the add-on nearly equals an individual rate, or some members rarely use it, separate month-to-month memberships can be smarter.

Who counts as family?

Gyms vary — many require members to share an address or be immediate family, and some cap the number of add-ons. Check the specific rules before assuming friends or roommates qualify.

What about joining fees and contracts?

Family plans often carry a one-time enrollment fee and an annual contract. Factor those in: a low monthly per-head cost is less attractive if it locks everyone into a 12-month commitment.
