Holiday Countdown Calculator
Count down the days until the next major holiday, including ones that move each year like Thanksgiving.
How it works
next date = this year's holiday if not yet passed, else next year's · days = holiday − start date · moving holidays use the nth weekday of the month
Fixed holidays like Christmas sit on the same month and day every year, so the calculator just checks whether this year's date is still ahead of your start date and rolls to next year if not. Moving holidays are computed from their rule — Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Memorial Day the last Monday of May — so the date is correct for whatever year it lands in. The countdown is then the plain difference in calendar days, with leap days already included.
Worked example
Counting from 15 Sep 2026 to Christmas: this year's 25 Dec 2026 is still ahead, so the target stays in 2026. The gap is 101 days — about 14.4 weeks — and it falls on a Friday.
Frequently asked questions
How does it handle holidays that move each year?
It computes them from their definition. Thanksgiving is the 4th Thursday of November, Memorial Day the last Monday of May, and so on, so the weekday and date are right every year.
What if the holiday is today?
The countdown shows "Today" with a note. Once the day passes, it automatically targets next year's occurrence.
Are these US dates?
The moving holidays (Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Mother's and Father's Day) use US rules. Fixed dates like Christmas and New Year are the same worldwide.
