How it works

Sales velocity = (opportunities × average deal value × win rate) ÷ sales cycle length (days)

Sales velocity rolls the four levers of a pipeline — number of deals, deal size, win rate and speed — into a single figure: revenue earned per day. Because cycle length is in the denominator, shortening the sales cycle raises velocity just as surely as adding opportunities or lifting win rate. It is the best one-number diagnostic for a sales engine, and testing each input shows which lever moves revenue most for the least effort.

Worked example

50 opportunities at an $8,000 average deal and a 25% win rate close $100,000 over a 60-day cycle, which is 100,000 ÷ 60 = $1,667 of revenue per day — roughly $50,000 a month.

Frequently asked questions

What is sales velocity?

It is how much revenue your pipeline generates per day, calculated as opportunities × average deal value × win rate, divided by the sales-cycle length in days. It condenses pipeline health into a single trendable number.

Which lever should I improve first?

Test each input in the calculator. Often shortening the sales cycle or lifting win rate raises velocity more cheaply than chasing more opportunities, because both multiply the value of every deal already in the pipeline.

What sales cycle length should I use?

Use the average number of days from a qualified opportunity to a closed deal, measured from your CRM. If cycles vary a lot by segment, calculate velocity separately for each segment.
