Tip and Split Rounding Calculator
Add a tip, split the bill, and round each share up to a whole amount so nobody fumbles with coins — with the real tip you end up leaving.
How it works
Share = ⌈(bill × (1 + tip%)) ÷ people ÷ step⌉ × step · Actual tip% = (collected − bill) ÷ bill × 100
Splitting a bill with a tip usually leaves an ugly per-person figure like $25.92. Rounding each share up to a whole amount (or to the nearest 5 or 10) makes the cash easy to hand over and always covers the tab. Because rounding adds a few cents per person, the tip you actually leave is a little higher than the percentage you picked — this shows that real figure so you know exactly how generous the table ended up being.
Worked example
An $86.40 bill with an 18% tip is $101.95. Split four ways that is $25.49 each; rounded up to a whole dollar, everyone pays $26, collecting $104. That covers the meal and leaves a real tip of about 20.4%.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the actual tip higher than the percentage I chose?
Rounding each share up adds a little on top of the exact tip, so the collected total exceeds bill plus your chosen tip. The "actual tip left" line shows the true percentage after that rounding.
Does rounding up ever short the bill?
No. Rounding each share up can only meet or exceed the total, so the tab and tip are always fully covered.
Can I round down instead?
This tool rounds up so the bill is never short. If you round down, collect the shares and check them against the total before paying, since you may fall a little under.
