How it works

scheduled workdays = days in the year that fall on your working weekdays · days worked = scheduled − public holidays − vacation · working hours = days worked × hours per day · hourly rate = salary ÷ (scheduled workdays × hours per day)

The number of working days in a year depends on the calendar: a Monday–Friday year has 260, 261 or 262 weekdays depending on which day it starts on and whether it is a leap year. Subtract the public holidays that fall on your workdays and the vacation you take to get the days you actually work. Paid hours — what an annual salary covers — include the holidays and vacation, which is why payroll divisors such as 2,080 (52 × 40) or 2,088 hours differ from the hours people are actually at work.

Worked example

2027 starts on a Friday and is not a leap year, so a Monday–Friday schedule has 261 workdays. With 10 public holidays and 15 vacation days you work 236 days; at 8 hours a day that is 1,888 working hours, about 157.3 h a month. A $50,000 salary over 2,088 paid hours is $23.95/h.

Frequently asked questions

How many working hours are in a year?

A full-time 40-hour, Monday–Friday job has 2,080 to 2,096 paid hours (260–262 weekdays × 8). After about 10 public holidays and 15 vacation days, the hours actually worked are closer to 1,880.

Why does 2,080 hours appear everywhere?

It is 52 weeks × 40 hours, the standard divisor for converting a salary to an hourly rate. Years with 261 or 262 weekdays have slightly more paid hours.

How many working days are in a year?

For a Monday–Friday week, 260 to 262 before holidays. A six-day week has about 312–313.

Should I count public holidays?

Only those that fall on your working days and that you do not work. Enter that number; holidays on weekends do not reduce working days.
