How it works

Working days = days in the month − weekend (non-working) days − holidays and days off that fall on working days − extra days off · Working hours = working days × hours per day

The calculator checks each day of the month against your work week (Monday to Friday unless you pick another pattern) and counts the working days. If you choose a holiday calendar, public holidays that land on a working day are subtracted; holidays that fall on a weekend are listed but not subtracted twice. US federal holidays use the official observance rule (a Saturday holiday is observed on Friday, a Sunday one on Monday), UK bank holidays include substitute days, Mexico follows article 74 of the Ley Federal del Trabajo, and Spain uses the national holidays common to the whole country. Under More options you can list your own days off (regional holidays, company closures, a bridge day), subtract a number of vacation days, and set your hours per day to get working hours for payroll or billing. The year table shows the working days, holidays and hours for every month of the year, with an annual total. A month has between 20 and 23 Monday-to-Friday days before holidays, depending on its length and the weekday it starts on.

Worked example

January 2026 has 31 days and starts on a Thursday. It has 4 Saturdays and 5 Sundays, so 31 − 9 = 22 weekdays: 22 working days, or 176 working hours at 8 hours a day. With US federal holidays, New Year’s Day (Thursday, January 1) and Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, January 19) are subtracted: 22 − 2 = 20 working days. With Mexico’s holidays only January 1 falls in the month, giving 21.

Frequently asked questions

How many working days are in a month?

Between 20 and 23 Monday-to-Friday days, before holidays. A 28-day February always has exactly 20; a 31-day month that starts on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday has 23. On average a month has about 21.7 weekdays (261 a year ÷ 12).

Are holidays excluded?

Only if you pick a holiday calendar. Choose US federal, UK (England & Wales), Mexico or Spain to subtract public holidays, or list your own days off under More options. Holidays that fall on a weekend are not subtracted again.

How many working days are in 2026?

There are 261 Monday-to-Friday days in 2026. After the 11 US federal holidays (all of which fall on weekdays or are observed on one) that leaves 250 working days. Select any month to see the year table with the total for your settings.

What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?

For US federal employees a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after. UK bank holidays move to the next weekday as a substitute day. In Mexico the day is not moved, and in Spain each region decides whether to move a Sunday holiday to Monday.

How do I calculate working hours for the month?

Multiply the working days by your hours per day. January 2026 with 22 working days at 8 hours a day is 176 hours; with 20 days after US holidays it is 160 hours. Change the hours per day under More options.

Why does it matter?

Working days are used to prorate monthly salaries, bill by the day, plan projects and staffing, and compare monthly output. Daily rate = monthly salary ÷ working days in the month.
