How it works

Total = sum of each qualification’s Tariff points · A level: A* 56, A 48, B 40, C 32, D 24, E 16 · AS: A 20, B 16, C 12, D 10, E 6 · EPQ: A* 28 … E 8 · BTEC Extended Diploma D*D*D* 168 … PPP 48 · Scottish Higher: A 33, B 27, C 21, D 15 · Advanced Higher: A 56 … D 32 · IB HL: 7 = 56, 6 = 48, 5 = 32, 4 = 24, 3 = 12 · IB SL: 7 = 28 … 3 = 6 · TOK/EE: A 12 … E 4

The UCAS Tariff gives every Level 3 (and SCQF Level 6) qualification a points value, so universities can set one entry figure that works across A levels, BTECs, Scottish Highers, the IB and more. Each A-level grade step is worth 8 points, from E at 16 up to A* at 56, so BBB = 120 and AAA = 144. An AS level is worth about 40% of an A level at the same grade, the EPQ half an A level, and BTEC Nationals scale with their size: an Extended Diploma is the size of three A levels (up to 168), a Diploma two (up to 112), a Foundation Diploma one and a half (up to 84), an Extended Certificate one (up to 56) and a Certificate half (up to 28). Scottish Highers run from 15 (D) to 33 (A) and Advanced Highers from 32 to 56. For the IB Diploma, UCAS scores each Higher and Standard Level certificate and the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay separately, rather than the 45-point diploma score. Pick your qualification system, enter your grades, and add anything else (music grades, or any qualification with its points) under More options. The breakdown, the best-three figure and the offers table show how your total compares with typical conditional offers.

Worked example

Grades of A, B and C give 48 + 40 + 32 = 120 points — the same total as BBB. Add a B in the EPQ (20) and a standalone AS level at C (12) and the total becomes 152, enough for an offer of 144 (AAA in points). A Scottish student with Highers AABBC has 33 + 33 + 27 + 27 + 21 = 141 points; an IB student with HL 6, 6, 5, SL 5, 5, 4 and B for both TOK and the Extended Essay has 48 + 48 + 32 + 16 + 16 + 12 + 10 + 10 = 192 points.

Frequently asked questions

How many UCAS points is AAB?

48 + 48 + 40 = 136 points. Each A is 48 and the B is 40.

Do AS levels and the EPQ count?

Yes. A standalone AS level is worth 20 points at A down to 6 at E, and the EPQ 28 at A* down to 8 at E. An AS you went on to complete as a full A level in the same subject is not counted twice — only the A level counts.

How many UCAS points is a BTEC Extended Diploma?

It depends on the grade: D*D*D* is 168, DDD is 144, DMM is 112 and MMM is 96. A Diploma is worth up to 112 (D*D*) and an Extended Certificate up to 56 (D*), the same as one A* at A level.

How are IB Diploma points counted?

UCAS does not use your 45-point IB score. Each Higher Level subject earns 56 for a 7, 48 for a 6, 32 for a 5, 24 for a 4 and 12 for a 3; Standard Level is half that, and Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay add 12 (A) down to 4 (E) each.

Is meeting the points total enough for an offer?

Not always. Many universities require specific grades in specific subjects (for example an A in Mathematics), cap how many qualifications they count, or do not use the Tariff at all, so you can reach the points but still miss a condition.
