IB Diploma Total Score Calculator
Add your six IB subject grades and the Theory of Knowledge / Extended Essay core points into a total out of 45.
How it works
Total = (sum of six subject grades, each 1–7) + core points (0–3) · Max = 42 + 3 = 45
The IB Diploma score is built from six subjects graded 1 to 7 — a maximum of 42 — plus up to 3 bonus points from the combination of the Theory of Knowledge essay and the Extended Essay, for a ceiling of 45. Passing the Diploma requires at least 24 points along with several conditions the raw total does not capture (minimum grades, no failing conditions). This tool computes the headline number; check the full pass requirements separately.
Worked example
Subject grades of 6, 6, 5, 6, 5, 5 sum to 33 out of 42. Adding 2 core points gives 35 out of 45, comfortably above the 24-point pass threshold.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum IB Diploma score?
45 points — six subjects at 7 each (42) plus 3 core points from the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix.
How many points do I need to pass?
A minimum of 24 points, but that alone is not sufficient. There are additional conditions — such as no more than a set number of grades below a threshold and no failing core components — that a point total cannot show.
Where do the 3 core points come from?
They are awarded from a grid that combines your Theory of Knowledge grade and your Extended Essay grade. A strong pairing earns up to 3 points; weak grades in both can even deduct.
