Rubric Score Calculator: Weighted Rubric Percentage and Letter Grade
Turn rubric levels into a grade: 2 to 8 criteria, each with its own score, maximum and weight, converted by straight percentage, the Moodle/Totara lowest-level adjustment or a floor scale (so a low level is not an automatic F), with letter grade, gradebook points, the gap to the next grade and a criterion breakdown.
How it works
criterion % = score ÷ max × 100 (percentage method) · or (score − lowest level) ÷ (max − lowest level) × 100 (lowest-level method) · or floor + (100 − floor) × (score − lowest) ÷ (max − lowest) (floor method) · rubric % = Σ(criterion % × weight) ÷ Σ weight · gradebook points = rubric % × assignment points ÷ 100
A rubric grades several parts of one piece of work, each on its own scale and often with a different importance. The calculator turns each criterion into a percentage, multiplies it by its weight and divides by the total weight. Because of that normalisation the weights do not have to add up to 100; weights of 4, 3, 2, 1 give the same result as 40, 30, 20, 10. How a level becomes a percentage matters more than most teachers expect. The plain percentage method (score ÷ max) is what you get when you add up rubric points by hand: on a 4-level rubric a 3 is 75% and a 2 is 50%, so a student rated "developing" fails. The lowest-level method is how Moodle and Totara normalise rubric grades: the bottom level counts as 0%, so on a 1–4 rubric a 2 is 33.3% and a 3 is 66.7%. The floor method keeps the top level at 100% and puts the bottom level at a floor you choose, such as 60% (a D), spacing the levels evenly in between; on a 1–4 rubric with a 60% floor, a 3 is 86.7% and a 2 is 73.3%, close to the hand-made conversion charts many schools publish. Pick the method your school or learning platform uses, and check the letter grade scale under More options. The plus/minus scale uses the common 97/93/90 cut-offs; your syllabus may differ.
Worked example
Four criteria scored 3.5/4, 4/4, 3/4 and 2.5/4 are 87.5%, 100%, 75% and 62.5% with the percentage method. With weights 40, 30, 20 and 10 the weighted sum is 87.5 × 40 + 100 × 30 + 75 × 20 + 62.5 × 10 = 8,625. Dividing by the total weight of 100 gives 86.25%, a B on the A–F scale, 3.75 percentage points short of an A. The raw points are 13 / 16 = 81.25% and the average level is 3.25 of 4.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a rubric score to a percentage?
For each criterion divide the score by its maximum, multiply by the criterion weight, add the results and divide by the total weight. With equal weights that is simply total points ÷ maximum points. If your rubric starts at level 1, a straight division gives low grades, so many teachers use a floor or lowest-level conversion instead.
Do the weights have to add up to 100%?
No. They are normalised for you, so weights of 4, 3, 2 and 1 give exactly the same result as 40, 30, 20 and 10. Only their ratios matter.
Why does a 2 out of 4 come out as 50%?
Because 2 ÷ 4 = 0.5. A rubric level is a description of quality, not a share of correct answers, so a "developing" 2 is often meant to be a C or D, not an F. The floor method fixes this: with a 60% floor on a 1–4 rubric, the levels become 60%, 73.3%, 86.7% and 100%.
How does Moodle calculate a rubric grade?
Moodle and Totara subtract the lowest level of each criterion from both the score and the maximum, then divide: (points − minimum) ÷ (maximum − minimum). A student with the lowest level everywhere gets 0%, so these platforms recommend giving the bottom level 0 points. Choose "Subtract the lowest level" to match.
What if all criteria are equally important?
Give every criterion the same weight, such as 25 each or 1 each. The result is then the plain average of the criterion percentages.
How do I put a rubric score into a gradebook out of 50 points?
Enter 50 as the assignment worth under More options. The calculator multiplies the rubric percentage by 50, so 86.25% becomes 43.13 points.
