How it works

return deadline = delivery date + return window (days, Mon–Fri business days, weeks × 7 or calendar months) · if the delivery day counts as day 1: − 1 day · ship-by = deadline − days in transit · days left = deadline − today · EU/UK cancellation = delivery + 14 days (+ 12 months if you were not informed) · refund = price − restocking fee − return shipping

Most retailers count the return window from the delivery date, giving you that many days to send an item back. The calculator adds the window to your delivery or purchase date — in calendar days, Monday-to-Friday business days, weeks or calendar months (clamped when a month is shorter) — and lets you choose whether the delivery day itself is day 1. It then counts the days and business days left, flags a weekend deadline (or plans for the Friday before), works out a ship-by date when the parcel has to arrive back in time, and sets a reminder a few days ahead. In the EU and UK, the statutory 14-day cancellation right for online and distance purchases is shown too, with the 12-month extension if the seller never told you about it and the dates to send the goods back and get your refund after you cancel. Enter the price, restocking fee and return postage to see what you will actually get back, and compare common windows from 7 days to a year in the table.

Worked example

Delivered September 5, 2026 with a 30-day window: the return deadline is Monday, October 5, 2026 (October 4 if the delivery day counts as day 1). Checked on September 16, 2026 that leaves 19 days — 2 weeks, 5 days, or 13 business days. If the parcel needs 5 days to get back, ship it by Wednesday, September 30, and a 3-day reminder lands on Sunday, September 27. In the EU, the 14-day cancellation right on the same delivery ends Saturday, September 19, 2026, which the EU weekend rule carries to Monday, September 21. Returning a $120 item with a 15% restocking fee and $8 postage refunds $94.

Frequently asked questions

Does the window start at purchase or delivery?

It depends on the retailer. Many count from delivery, some from the order or purchase date, and holiday purchases often get an extended window. Enter the date the policy names.

Is the delivery day day 0 or day 1?

Most policies and consumer laws start counting the day after delivery, so a 30-day window from September 5 ends October 5. Some stores count the delivery day as day 1, which ends it on October 4. Pick the option that matches the policy wording; if unsure, plan for the earlier date.

Does the item need to arrive back by the deadline?

Sometimes. Some policies only need you to start the return or ship it by the deadline; others need it received. If it must arrive, enter the shipping time under More options to get a ship-by date.

What is the EU and UK 14-day right to cancel?

For most online, phone and doorstep purchases you can cancel within 14 days of delivery without giving a reason. After you tell the seller, you have 14 days to send the goods back, and the seller must refund you within 14 days (it may wait until the goods arrive or you show proof of sending). If the seller never told you about this right, the period is extended by up to 12 months.

What if the deadline is a weekend or holiday?

Online returns can usually be started any day, but in-store returns depend on opening hours. Don’t assume an extension — choose “Plan for the Friday before” to get a safe date.

How much will I get back?

Usually the item price, minus any restocking fee (often 10–25% for electronics or opened items) and return postage if you pay it. Enter them under More options for an estimate. Store policies differ on refunding the original shipping charge; under the EU and UK 14-day cancellation right the standard delivery charge must be refunded.
